NaREC select Evopod for demonstration of new test facility
01/06/2007

Evopod™ has been selected by NaREC for demonstrating their new tidal energy test facility at the Tees Barrage which will be the only independent large scale tidal stream testing facility for device prototypes in Europe.

The contract was awarded in mid February and the 1/10th scale Evopod™ prototype was delivered to NaREC on the 23rd April for hook-up of the instrumentation by NaREC engineers. The device will be used for the official launch of the Test Facility on the 8th June which will be attended by tidal developers, investors and industry stakeholders.

Graeme Mackie, Managing Director of Oceanflowenergy said:

"The launch event will be a great way for developers based in the region to showcase what we have to offer the wider industry. The UK has a lot of potential for harnessing the power of the sea, and armed with these new dedicated facilities, the North East will certainly continue to benefit from the worldwide investment in sustainable energy."

Jamie Grimwade, Marine Renewable Technical Specialist at NaREC is keen to get started:

"Tidal renewables are well on their way to becoming commercial - especially since tidal turbines have much in common technically with Offshore Wind Farms but with less visual impact. NaREC is in a great position to give this market the support it needs to take-off in a big way."
