Energy Production Costs

Overberg has developed models for calculating the turbine performance, the annual energy output and the unit cost of generation in different flow regimes.

Turbine performance

This model uses blade element momentum theory to compute the turbine efficiency and has been calibrated to scale model test results.

Typical turbine performance numerical model output

Annual energy

This model takes account of the tidal flow variations over the lunar day and the synodic month (moon and sun alignments) and data on 1st / 2nd tide variations.

Cost of generation

CAPEX and OPEX models have been developed to determine the NPV of the cost of generation taking into account detailed cost make-up, project life and discount rate.

Evopod offers attractive costs of electricity generation with early stage developments because of:

  • the adoption of low cost power generation packages developed for the highly competitive wind turbine industry
  • the ability to operate in the more energetic deep water tidal stream areas
  • the adoption of a high efficiency large diameter turbine
  • the relatively low cost of installation compared to fixed seabed mounted solutions
  • the ability to disconnect units from their moorings and the grid to de-risk maintenance issues
